What You'll Need
1 clean jar with tight-fitting lid (mason jar works well)
1/2 cup heavy whipping cream (at room temperature)
Pinch of salt (optional)
Strainer or cheesecloth
Small bowl
Steps
Pour 1/2 cup of heavy whipping cream into the jar, filling it no more than halfway.
Seal the lid tightly.
Shake the jar continuously – this can be done in groups, passing it around.
After a few minutes, observe the whipped cream stage.
Continue shaking until the mixture suddenly separates into a solid yellow lump (butter) and a white liquid (buttermilk).
Drain off the liquid (buttermilk) through a strainer.
Press the butter with a spoon to squeeze out any remaining liquid. Add a pinch of salt if desired.
